Overview

City Year UK is a year-long, full-time leadership development programme. You spend the year as a near-peer mentor in a partner school, then return employer-ready.

Structure & format

Monday to Friday during school term time, in school as a mentor plus weekly Leadership Development Programme sessions delivered with corporate partners.

Pay & benefits

Paid living allowance for the programme year.

Eligibility

Aged 18–25 at the start of the programme (26/27 considered on a case-by-case basis). Right to live and work in the UK (visa sponsorship is not offered). Open to school leavers, graduates and career changers , a degree is not required.

Application process

Eligibility form on cityyear.org.uk/apply-now → full application (~30 mins, two references) → interview. Rolling intake, but earlier applications get first pick of locations.

Why this matters

One of the strongest social-impact gap-year routes in the UK, with structured leadership development and graduate-employer partnerships (Bank of America, DHL, National Grid, Vertex).

Heads up

Dates can shift each year. Always confirm the live deadline on the provider's own page before you apply.
